ITINERARY: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN -FROM CASTEL DELL'OVO TO PALAZZO SAN GIACOMO-

On the little island of Megaride, where the first Greeks landed, and the place in which the mermaid Partenope died, the one who gave life to this Greek city, then luxurious residence of the Roman general Lucullus. It was that during the Middle Ages that the castle “Castel dell'Ovo” was built, then came the monks, the Normans, so much history by the Gulf of Posillipo in Sorrento, Capri. According to a medieval legend the Latin poet Virgil hid an egg in the underground of a fortress, today Castel dell'Ovo. We are in Santa Lucia, where the ancient and the modern meet at the foot of Monte Echia. Leaving this place we reach, with a ten minutes walk, the monumental Piazza del Plebiscito. We admire the Royal Palace, the church of San Francesco di Paola, and other buildings which flank the sides of the square while on the top of Vomero Hill, you can see the Certosa di San Martino and Castel S'Elmo waiting for new visitors. We make a stop at the Literary Caffè Gambrinus, once a meeting place for Italian and European intellectuals society. Then we continue our walk along Via Toledo, from which we enter the Galleria Umberto I, today a nice shopping area. From here we can see the oldest Opera House in the world, Teatro San Carlo. Leaving the Galleria Umberto I, we will reach the Angevin “Castel Nuovo” or “Maschio Angioino”, once a royal residence. On the facade we can see Triumphal Arch made of white marble from Carrara. We'll over a look the excavations of the City Hall Square, which gave us a lot of surprises: including the finding of three roman ships. We will end the walk in front of he City Hall so called “Palazzo San Giacomo”.
